News: Chorus Collection Designed in Collaboration with DesignOffice
Chorus is a collection of compact wall and ceiling lights with a concentric circular form, designed in collaboration by DesignOffice and Coco Flip. The project brings together a wider group of makers and craftspeople, including ceramic artist Belinda Wiltshire. Its name refers to this collective process: multiple voices, materials, and hands contributing to a single outcome.

Dancer Editions brought together five of Melbourne's leading architecture and interior practices, each invited to design a new edition of the Dancer Collection in collaboration with Melbourne ceramicist Belinda Wiltshire.
DesignOffice's contribution to that project, originally conceived for the exhibition only, was earmarked by Coco Flip for further development after the success of the program. Over the following year, the studio worked to refine the piece for production, expanding the original ceramic into cast brass and cast aluminium. Chorus now joins the broader Coco Flip family of products. A sculptural lighting collection handcrafted in Melbourne, extending into new materials and a new form.

The light's concentric geometry is carefully proportioned, with illumination concealed within the form to cast a warm and radiant glow and accentuate the shadow produced by the object's own profile. Chorus holds presence whether illuminated or switched off, the circular form sitting on the wall as a considered object when unlit. The object works as a single fixture or can be repeated across a wall in linear runs or larger grid compositions, scaling from a single punctuation point to a considered installation.
Chorus is available in three finishes. The brass and aluminium versions are sand-cast, a process that leaves a subtle texture across the surface, then finished by through a rumbling process that softens and refines the form. The ceramic version is hand-thrown and glazed with black iron oxide, producing a dark, matte surface. Across all three, the process is hands-on and the results individual, with no two pieces identical.

"We wanted to create a simple, elegant, geometrically sculptural piece, a light which added to its environment whether illuminated or not" says DesignOffice. "The compact circular form is also deliberately intended to suit applications at scale, working on its own as a single icon, expanding into linear compositions, or working across a large grid to create a planar installation of illuminated perforation.”
"Coco Flip has always worked collaboratively, especially with our makers and manufacturers who bring such a wealth of knowledge to exploring materials and resolving refined, lasting products. What was unusual for us with Chorus was inviting collaboration on the design concept itself. We're fortunate to be surrounded by a rich and diverse design community and we've always wanted to work with them to conceive new products. Our Dancer Editions exhibition presented an opportunity to finally do this.” says Kate Stokes, co-director of Coco Flip.

Chorus is available to order now directly from Coco Flip or through our retail partners, with a lead time of 8 to 10 weeks. In Europe, Chorus is available through The Specified.
