German Spinning Tops
01.09.2010

I've been a little infatuated by spinning tops for a while now – they were part of the inspiration behind the Coco Pendant light and continue to intrigue me. Notcot recently blogged about these incredible spinning tops that they discovered in Stuttgart, Germany. I could play with these for hours.

A Wall of Bikes

Isn't this splendid? A bicycle shop in Altlandsberg, Germany advertises their goods with a wall of around 120 bikes mounted on the building’s exterior in lieu of a sign.

Lianes Lamp
bouroullec.com
"The Lianes are interconnected lamps. The general idea behind the Lianes is to incorporate and unify all the elements of the lamp - from the long cables to the fixation points to the actual lit shell. In order to make this possible, every single interrelated element is covered with black or flesh-coloured leather – even the fixation points that allow the Lianes to be hung from the ceiling. Thanks to the leather-to-leather adherence and to the natural brakes that comes from the topstitching passing through the tying points, it is easy to adjust the orientation and the height of the light freely."

Lighthouse Lamp for Established & Sons
bouroullec.com
"Established & Sons invited us to conceive a contemporary lamp using the traditional know-how of Venini, Italy. For Lighthouse, our inspiration came from the observation of the sophisticated craftsmanship of Murano’s master glass blowers. The idea was to light up a voluminous round glass structure that would be supported by a delicate aluminium stick. We worked on the precariousness of the equilibrium: there is one and only, sharp point of contact, no fixation, as if the glass was in its originate state, hanging insecurely from the blowing pipe. We wanted to work on the vulnerability of the object. What was also interesting to us was the mix of techniques to make the three elements that craft this lamp: the base and the stick are industrially made in opposition to the glass that has been blown using old tradition methods. The color of the lamp varies in function of the Murano glass color palette, from light pink to vibrant orange."

CAMPING for Normann-Copenhagen
jesperkthomsen.dk
"The archetypical traditional camping equipment has been my inspiration. The design has a recognition factor that brings the thoughts over to leisure and togetherness, that many think are typical of camping. I like the thought of bringing outdoor pursuits indoors or, perhaps more correctly, freedom into the living room."
